Job Purpose

Create safety management plans for new products and product improvements

Work with Product Design engineers to develop and implement safety based verification

Safety Engineering activities have expanded as worldwide regulatory requirements have increased to mandate more safety analysis of locomotive designs.

Key Job Elements

Create safety management plans for new products and product improvements

Safety engineering leadership to engineering / design staff.

Work with Product Design engineers to develop and implement safety based verification

Manage project deliverables required to satisfy safety related deliverables for locomotive on-board software.

Review system designs and implementations against required Safety Standards.

Provide mentorship and guidance regarding the safety framework to the multiple engineering disciplines, who the candidate will be working with.

Work in conjunction with Locomotive Systems Engineering, Electrical Systems Engineer, Control Systems Engineering, Software Engineering and Software Test to align the design, development and verification processes with Safety Standards and pending regulations.

Perform systems level architecture safety analysis, along with low level system safety analysis.

Safety Case preparation, Hazard Identification/Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), Event Tree Analysis (ETA) and Quantitative Risk Assessment(QRA).

 Present safety analysis status to management

 Adaptability and flexibility to work in a dynamic environment

Education / Training

• BS Engineering (EE, CS or equiv.)

Qualifications and Experience

• Experience with Functional Safety Analysis methods

• Knowledge and expertise in standard Microsoft applications

• High degree organizational and communication skills

• High level of analytical ability with complex problems

• Familiarity with Safety standards (e.g. EN 50126, EN 50128, EN 50129, EN 50657, MIL-STD-882, or IEC 61508)

• Knowledge of test and validation planning & execution

Preferred:

• Experience with the railway industry, whereas they have held the role of a Safety Engineer leading effort such as training, implementing control architectures, hosting safety workshops and defining the safety requirements for a system.

• Familiarity with 49 CFR 229 Sub-part E, 49 CFR 238.105.

• A solid track record of establishing proof of safety in locomotive safety and experience with the use of safety critical software design principals.

• Experience certifying products to EN 50128, EN 50657 or MIL-STD-882E

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• Demonstrates the ability to analyze information effectively and is able to communicate to peers with lessor experience.

• Excellent attention to detail.

• 5 years experience in the field of Software Safety.

• MS Engineering with Functional Safety Focus

• Functional Safety Certification (FSP, FSE)

• Experience with Requirements Management tool(s)

• Excellent interpersonal skills including leading and working in a cross-functional team environment

• EMD Locomotive experience is a PLUS.
