Job Purpose

The Manganese Inventory Specialist determines the quantity and order date for castings needed to meet the production schedule. This position functions as a liaison between the supplier foundries, Manufacturing, Engineering and Planning. It is a focal point among all departments to effectively communicate and help meet schedule requirements while optimizing inventory levels. This role will be primarily responsible for managing the castings but will also support other initiatives within the Supply Chain group.

Key Job Elements

•Communicates and manages Manganese castings.

•Coordinate the scheduling of product from foundries, pattern shops and internal machine schedules.

•Review, monitor and complete order follow ups to assure manufacturing plans are 100% achievable based upon the availability of castings.

•Monitor supplier performance with the ability to intervene as appropriate to correct unacceptable service levels.

•Works closely with various internal departments at Progress Rail to maintain casting schedules within the Track Work facilities.

•Conduct meetings with foundries and internal groups as needed to effectively communicate and follow up on open items.

•Communicate supply plans thru LN updates, Excel reports and other tools on the status of the Manganese castings.

•Research order and delivery discrepancies and resolve MRP related issues.

•Maintain MRP master settings in accordance with company guidelines.

•Coordinate the NAFTA documentation process for export shipments.

•Drive process improvement activities related to inventory accuracy.

•Participate and/or lead projects as required.

Education / Training


High school diploma or Associates degree

Minimum of two years in Production Planning, Material Planning, Warehouse or Scheduling in a manufacturing environment.


Associate or Bachelor degree in Supply Chain or Manufacturing/Operations

APICS certification

LEAN Manufacturing experience

Six Sigma trained

Qualifications and Experience

.•Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a self-directed, team based environment.

•Strong Microsoft Excel and ERP/MRP system skills.

•Competency using other computer based programs such as Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.

•Solid problem-solving, analytical and decision making skills.

•Strong communication and interpersonal skills to negotiate solutions with suppliers and internal customers.

•Ability to manage multiple task and deadlines.
